Just how wiley are coyotes?

I would necessarily agree. However, you need to keep your MALE dogs inside at night. The coyote will call them and then eat them. Yep, it happened to my red healer pup.

We used to routinely break up packs where I used to live. The coyote were way too numerous and no one around there knew what to do about them.

They are opportunists and will dine on anything the pack can catch. These guys are not your loving puppy, they are ruthless hunters and in sufficient numbers will surgically kill.

Don't try to scare them off for now if you are planning on shooting them when you have a gun. It will make them harder to shoot!!

I have to admit I kind of like coyotes, but not around the house. A pack of ten is an accident waiting to happen, they are obviously not afraid.

Coyotes see pets and livestock as easier pickins than their natural food sources , natural food sources are used to dodging coyotes chickens are not and dogs think they can whip anything so their running after them will get them killed, especially the beagle. the first answers were right shoot everyone you see . Your best bet for long term help will be a livestock guard dog , but do your homework their are a lot of breeds and they have to be handled differently than other dogs , they have a job to do. I haven't lost anything since I got my anatolian sheperd and anatolian / pyrenese mix , and before them the coyotes got every lamb and kid we had.

We're planning on Pyrenees once we get goats, but that is a year away, at least. My chicken run is now secure. They can't get out and coyotes can't get in, so I won't feel so much like a need to do something if I see them. I have a feeling they've been what the dogs have been barking at even when I can't see them.

But I really don't like how comfortable they are and so close to the house!

Now I need to start working on the roof so raccoons can't get in. But maybe the coyotes are why I haven't seen any evidence of coons anywhere?

We have had both plus skunks plus an 8 member herd of deer, all interact can get busy! One coyote took to daytime visits but my neighbor called when she saw him coming down the hill and I had the hose ready and waiting. He finally grew tired of being wet and having an old lady banging a bucket in his ear. but the packs ,there are 3, sing to each other every night and they are not far away!

My dogs just dragged another deer leg home. Please don't tell me the coyotes are dragging their kills here to eat! It's almost sundown and everyone but the chickens are locked up for the night. I think they're relatively safe from coyotes, anyway. The only way in I'm not too sure about is 6 feet off the ground through a window that does have a door but I'm afraid a raccoon might be able to get it open if they can get solid enough footing to hold onto the tin roofing material that is being used as siding!

I agree shoot them as soon as possible. I kill all Coyotes as soon as I can. I have no use for them. I have a Great Py and Saint and since them I have never had another problem with coyotes.

They WILL lure dogs off and kill them. I wouldnt be comfortable with even one in my yard, you are definitely doing the right thing in thinking of ways to deter them.

Sounds like you moved in to house possibly very near a den site . Was the property vacant for awhile or possibly owned by coyote friendly people ? [ I know somone that fed them and another that allowed a 3 legged coyote to den under the garage and raise pups ] .
They breed now , late winter , to welp in early spring . The breeding season changes their behavior considerably LOL . You're pretty fortunate they did not turn on your dogs . You're going to have to take steps to move them on and that may require putting some down to insure they know they are living in unsafe territory . If you locate a den site [ they don't live in them , just raise pups or " kits " there ] be sure to at least damage the opening and have your DH or dogs " mark " it .
