A am somewhat new to chickens, I got mine in around 2019, as I had a lot of time on my hands and had started birdwatching in that year also. This caused me to become very interested in birds in general.
I currently have 5 hens, just a small backyard flock. 2 chocolate orpingtons, one english silver laced, and 2 noirans.
My favourite part of backyard chickens is watching them grow, seeing them react and play around, naming them and constantly learning something.
I did not get to name the chocolate hens, my great-grandma named one Penny Lane, and because all the chickens my mom had named we had to get rid of, she named the other Pecan Pie. The silver-laced is named Daisy, and the Noirans Maple and Tillie.
I also have 2 dogs, Sam and Cuba.
I birdwatch, collect rocks, draw, write, hike and read a lot. I am in scouts and play piano.
When I first began with chickens, I had pretty bad luck. Our chicks were: Shadow, Lavender, Chicken Nugget II, Rowan, Blossom, Violet, Daisy, Chicken Nugget I, Willow, Holly and Fern. Chicken Nugget I died, 8 more turned out as roosters, which we could not keep because of the people living near us. We were left with Daisy and Fern, the latter of which turned out to be a really well-behaved rooster. Then, as winter came, we bought three more chocolate orpington hens. Hazel, Pecan and Penny. We got them in fall, and Hazel, who had one blind eye, died of heat stroke in the summer. Then we got 5 more, noirans, Maple, Amber, Tillie, Charcoal and April. We got to keep 2 of these. Maple and Tillie.
When I showed interest in chickens, I had to research for about half a year. That is when I found this site.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow

Nice introduction! I am sure bird watching leads to keeping chickens, it all makes sense to bring them in closer to us. When I was 2, my mom said I was already picking up wild bird feathers and started a collection of them in a shoe box. I was doomed to be a bird nerd for the rest of my life. :D

Love the variety of breeds you keep, love the names too!! ❤

Glad you joined us here!

Birds are fun to watch, whether small like wrens or larger like chickens.

Do you make sketches of your chickens?
