Hi all im sorry but im all new here im not sure yet how to use this site. I have a coop and a run coming my way. Than the work begins. I want just a few hens the guy that built my coop said it will hold up to 9 chickens I only want about three maybe four. I want some that lay eggs. I think those silkies are cool looking. Any how I need to find were to get chickens what kind I should get. I been reading up on getting the coop ready and all. Im getting real excited about all this. Should I get a hanging feeder and what about a waterer ? Any help would be great Thanks

I would start by clicking on the learning center link at the top of this page. It provides a plethora of info on all aspects of chicken husbandry. There are so many different opinions and options, it comes down to what is convenient for you.

Also, utilize the search section. for example, type in homemade feeder and you'll be amazed!!

Don't know much about silkies but I studied up on a ton of breeds before i got mine and decided to get Buff Orpingtons, barred Rocks and Silver laced wyandottes. They are all very sweet and now I want more!!!

A hanging feeder and waterer are ideal, this way the chickens can't mess in them and scratch the food out.

Ideally the feeder and water should hang level with the chickens back. If you put them on a chain you can raise them as the chickens grow.

Also you may want to hang them were they are out of rain and sun to keep food dry and water cool.

You can check out the way I have my feeder and waterer on my BYC page if you need ideas.
