Sorry for your loss. I just counted 7 hawks above my yard so I ran and got some bottle rockets to shoot at them, that didn't seem to help at all. All it did was scare the crap out of my dog!

I'm sorry, too.

I lost several birds to hawks last year starting with my Polish. I never saw one taken by a hawk, but I was losing the smallest bird every time. I suspected a hawk but wasn't sure. Then one day, the chickens were scratching in the woods and started acting strange. I looked and saw a young hawk on the low limbs above their heads. It hopped from chicken to chicken looking for one to get but (I guess) decided the big girls were too much for him. He flew off and I haven't lost any more since.

I have a flock of crows that have been hanging around for the past several months. They eat corn from the deer feeders and I leave an egg or two out for them near the house (away from the coop.) I hope they are the insurance I need to prevent hawk attacks in the future.

I hope you don't have any more trouble.

I'm very sorry for your loss

I know silkies are the sweetest things. I was terrified that would happen because I live near a big farm and there are hawks everywhere so I keep my chickens in a sort of fence box. The top, bottom, and sides are completely fenced.

That's what I do. I leave them eggs. It works great, however, when they are sitting on eggs, they are not around. Once the chicks are hatched, the crows are back and even steal eggs from the coop, but I don't care!

I'm so very, very sorry about your little sweet one.

If I were in charge of the world, it wouldn't work that way. I just hope that somehow it was very quick......

So sorry. That is truly devastating...you came to the right place as most of us know how terrible it feels to lose a chicken friend.

Hope the hawk doesn't come back. Keep a close eye on the flock in the meanwhile.

One of my silkies came close to being eaten by a hawk a few months back. I was inside, and heard the awful cry. When I went outside, there sat a young hawk on my patio table. I scared it off, and the silkies came running to me. Only 1 didn't, and I knew she was the one that he went after. Luckly she was okay. The hawk must have been to young to take her off.
