Newly retired with a new place and space for a small homestead. First time chickens. I got a dozen. Four roosters are now gone, (THAT was disgusting) and four hens gone to predation. I love my 2 heritage Speckled Sussex and 2 mislabeled mystery hens (probably a white leghorn in the mix). Still getting eggs in mid-January.
I wish I could get black leghorns, I hear the hawks leave those alone, (they look like crows).

Hiya, Mindy, and welcome to BYC!! :frow My black silkies from several years ago can tell you that hawks like chickens no matter what color. Ever heard the term eagle-eye? They knew these were no crows. :)

We've gotten that hawk issue fixed since then but that was scary.

@TwoCrows had a good suggestion about a covered run
