Just need to vent

Today I came home and my dad left me a note one of my dogs had killed another chicken and of course it was my little Gertie a little d'anver that was the only one that made it from my hatch in June. She was my little baby she would sit on my arm and sing to me.

You would think dad would learn by now to make sure all chickens are in their area when he lets the dogs out. I am a little upset right now and you guys are the only ones that will really understand. Don't get me wrong I love that my dad will let the dogs out during the day but poor Gertie couldn't he had just double checked.

So Gertie is buried next to my rose bush and no more pretty songs from her
I liked my little girl alot.

Men are not as good at multi-tasking as women, that's how these things can happen. Now that this has happened again maybe he will pay more attention to what he's going to do before he does it.

The only other option you have is to keep the birds up when you're not around or build them their own secure outside area.

It hurts to lose a favorite bird and wish you didn't have to experience it.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I recently lost a chicken from my own dad letting the dogs out without checking. He was just trying to help and the dog that got her has an extreamly high prey drive so I couldn't be mad at him.

I'm so sorry! I lost my d'anvers a few weeks ago, also. It was my fault, though, since I wasn't careful enough.. although I think my dog was the one who did the actual deed. Rocky was a super sweet roo, hid his head under my arm. What a terrific breed they are! I cried for several days, and completely ignored my dogs (who spent that time avoiding me).

I'm sure your dad was just trying to help, and probably feels awful. Give yourself some time to grieve, and then tell the poor man that you know it was an accident.
