Just one chicken left and I fear she is cold and lonely!

I also started out with four, lost two to undetermined illness - at different times, so it wasn't something communicable. My two remaining girls have bonded but even so I can tell they would feel safer with a flock surrounding them. I'm getting four babies in June, just hope they can hang on until then. I hope you can find some friends for your porr lonely Feather!

Thanks for all the idea and support. I do think I will ask around for a buddy. We live in rural NJ and the weather has been snowy lately, keeping Feather in the barn. At least when she can get out she can sit by the front door, and peer in at us. She seems to like that.

You need at least one, preferably 2 more. Check out the for sale section here on BYC. I know there are several in the NY, NJ, Penn area available. We have a very small flock too, and the trouble with that is when you loose one it's more disruptive to the flock (as well as hard on us). We had to add a couple of girls a couple of months ago to make up for a loss. It's difficult at first, but worth it to know that they are all buddies now and cuddling up together out there when it's cold out.

new chick 203, cute hen house! Very nice. I ran it by my husband and he was open to acquiring a buddy. Our problem is in the warmer months, when our free-ranging chickens poop all over the driveway and walkways. Having just one was appealing in that regard. The loneliness, however, is more worrying than a little extra scooping. I'll let you know how it goes. We have a neighbor who keeps a flock, including all the hens that result from first grade chick hatching. And we have an agway type place that has a large flock. Two good places to look into!
