Just rescued some more Battery Hens *pics*

Yes, my old "red" is about 7. She only stopped laying this summer. I started out with 4 and she is the last one. When they first came to inlet farm, they had never had the grass beneath their feet. For the first few weeks they wouldn't venture out of the coop. They had been debeaked and were dreadfully skinny. Now red does what she likes, when she likes. And I wouldn't have it any other way. I have plenty of laying hens, but there's only one " red ".
I started out with 6 battery hens and she is the only one left! She has done so well lasting so long!

It would be nice if we could all adopt a few, I can only imagine the miserable lives they had before they came here. A simple kindness can make all the difference.
I have been in a battery house and a free range one, they where horrible!

I have rescued about 44 in the past 5 years :)

I have been to some private homes, to view chickens for sale, that have left me scratching my head. Unfortunately my 15 year old daughter has taken it upon herself to rescue off the track race horses. We now have three, making a total of 9 horses on the property. Our feed bill is substantial, but I'm sure I can home a few more rescue hens when "red " goes to the big hen house in the sky. At 44 you are certainly pulling above your weight. Well done.

I think I love Edwina more today then I ever have before. My Jack Russel was being a idiot walking around sniffing all the hens tails and bums and then he got to Edwina and started doing it and then he shoved her a bit and she turned around and pecked his nose hard and the dog got such a shock and flew backwards and nearly fell over! He put his tail in between his legs and ran around the other side of me and jamp on my knee. He then decided to challenge Edwina, so he went back and started running up at her barking and all the other hens got such a shock and started panicking and Edwina just got into a fighting position and leveled up to him! I then took him away and Edwina looked so proud that she is finally above someone in the pecking order!

Ruby hasn't been herself lately. I have recently found out today that she has a resparitory (i dont know how to spell it) infection. I'm going to order her some anti biotics!

I love the story of Edwina, good on her! Chickens can be pretty brave sometimes, they are so amazing to watch squaring up to an apex predator. Good luck with your sick girl.

Not a dumb question at all! :)

Where abouts are you? UK or USA?
If you are in the UK I might be able to help of you tell me where abouts you live.

If you are in the USA, then I can't be as much help because they are harder to get over there. You could do a quick google search to see if there is any chickens rescues near you, you can also find out a egg company and contact them and ask if you could buy some of their girls when they are ready to go. You could try and find some companys by looking on the inside of a caged egg box to see if there is any contact details.

OH! Oh, you are SO kind! Thank you! Man, I feel stupid. (Feel that way A LOT.) Of course - rescue. The Internet is a miracle. I'm in the U.S. - California - probably several rescues around here. We'll be moving to Nevada but it's just next door. I bet I can find something. Rescues. Duh. Thank you! XO
