Just saw this on Drudge.....85,000 chickens killed in coop collapse

I just saw a news bit about collapsing roofs. It said that 2 feet of snow on the typical roof weighs about 19 tons. Yowsa! Said flat roofs were more vulnerable, but slanted roofs can fail as well.
I remember back in Dec.1996 here in Seattle there was a heavy snowfall, and roofs/carports/garages and some businesses had roofs that failed. I got back from vacation in sunny Alaska to find that the carport where I lived had collapsed. Luckily I was parked at the airport. Lol

I remember that - we had moved back to Iowa in June of '96 from Seattle but still kind of kept track of what went on there.

Funny thing is the winter before there was like 2 inches of snow on the ground and it shut the schools down for 3 days. Being a native Iowan I found it amusing. People also abandoned their cars on the interstate.

It is sad about those chickens.

I guess I am the only one with a macabre sense of humor; the comments about the story were halirious! While I hate to hear of mass extermination of one's livelyhood, and I feel sorry for the chickens squashed by the falling building and snow, the comments were still funny. Most of us here have small coops and we care tenderly for our birds so that they become almost members of the family. Commercial operations are seen as cold and unfeeling. Maybe they don't tuck their babies in at night, but you can bet the commercial farmers care about the welfare of their flocks as much as we do, just in a different way. Those birds are their living and a loss like that is staggering. I don't foresee my 2 hens even approaching the level of sustaining my living. If my girls were to die suddenly, I would greive, then go get some more. I also find it humorous that the picture posted with the story is of a red naked neck, not a commercial chicken. Some reporter is a real dufus.

I wondered about the naked neck - but silly me, I thought oh they must've been raising NNs.

Yeah I always like looking at the comments at the bottom of news stories. I get all my news off internet- I don't even watch tv or movies. But sometimes it is like watching a train wreck as the people argue back and forth, and insult each other.

I would hope they were insured for such a loss.

That is so sad. Those poor animals. The horses and cows that were lost to are heartbreaking.

I also wanted to say that I love your food recipe. Mine is a little different but my girls love it. I love the red winter wheat berries...they really enjoy them too so it is a constant part of their mix along with crimped oats and rolled barley and BOSS.

Feed grains the best way to go IMHO

Thank you! I am glad to hear your girls love their grains too!
