Just saying Hello Hello!

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Sort of ... we had farm chickens growing up. The mean red ones 😂
And I had my own 3 pet chickens abt 5 years ago in the city.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
——0 ... plus 20 that will be arriving in April.

(3) What breeds do you have?
——White Ameraucana and Faverolles.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
——They are great companions, easy on the land usage and a ton of fun to watch. I don’t have a TV so perhaps I’m more entertained than I should be haha!

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
—— Around here we just invent things to do ... or avoid doing things, depending. That’s about all the hobby my paychecks can handle.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
—— : ) I live in the woods 😂 It’s always interesting.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D

—— DuckDuckGo; yesterday? I have so many questions. And you have so much information! :D
Welcome to BYC!! :)

Thank you so much!
I work an odd schedule to get those $ that keep me fat and happy 😃 so Im a bit out of sync most days.

Welcome back to the wide world of chickens! Jumping in with 20 at a time seems ambitious, but why not get "chicken math" out of the way right out of the gate?

You've picked two great breeds -- I have to admit I never get tired of seeing my fluffy-footed Faverolles dash around with their galloping gait. Even with myriad TV channels available, chickens can easily be more entertaining.

Living by the woods is amazing, but it also translates to plenty of predators. Of course, you have time to prepare for your birds' safety. Let us know when those babies arrive, and welcome to BYC! Let us know if and when you need help; we're here for you.

Living out here is amazing! My first encounter with a ground hog I thought I needed to help a beaver with an injured tail. I don’t know about all ground hogs, but mine, which lives under a fallen tree 20’ from my back door is the ‘take no prisoners’ type. 😂

I chose the Faverolles because I love ❤️ love ❤️ love them! They’re not the most practical chicken but they will fill my days with good times and good eats.
The Ameraucanas make me a little nervous. They were ridiculously expensive and the reviews on the breed are all over the place. We’ll see how it goes.

There’s an old 4 room house from the 1890s down by the stream. It’s not quaint or charming. It’s an ugly house with leaky, sill rotted windows, old fireplaces built into every room and no indoor plumbing. But the roof doesn’t leak, the interior walls and floors are solid despite the porches front and back having rotted away.
I have power into it now but I’m still working on getting the water plumbed in.
I’m using the back two rooms, separated by the hall to the back door, for the chickens.
By the time it’s needed I’ll have a good sized run on the back.

The predators out here are insanely prolific! And I’m not sure what they all are yet. I have weasels that look like very large brown ferrets .. So I’m creating a chicken fortress as my nearest neighbors have warned against having small livestock and even outdoor pets like a cat.

I may not be as cunning as a weasel but I am far, far smarter. And I’m in it to win it 😂

Thus, the ‘chicken math’.
All of my chickens need to bond and establish their team rankings ASAP. They’ll be spending the rest of their lives together and not free ranging - ever. I can sort them into two flocks, if needed, due to the Faverolles being gentle birds and the Ameraucanas might bully them.
And I have the probability of roosters considered as well.

All in all, I think I’m on the right track. I just need to learn a whole lot more abt getting the chickens off of store bought feed and taking care of their vet needs whenever possible.

My city Faverolles were never seriously ill or wounded in any way. But then again, they were obviously obese and very poor egg layers who died ‘mysteriously’. So, yes, I have much to learn.

😂 I’m feeling chatty tonight. Again Thank you all so much for what you have done here! The sharing of information is incredible!
