And I think I can answer why you got a white chick: both parent birds must be IB split to white. My own IBs surprised the heck out of me with their first clutch, two IB and four white. I was not expecting it either!

Yay, glad they all hatched farmerboy16. I hear 100% hatch on shipped eggs is rare. No luck on my 2 yet. Got some rocking and I think peeping from 1 but no pip. Anyone know how long the air will last without a pip? I'm trying not to stay glued to the incubator window, wish I had work today to distract me....

White and black shoulder peafowl are white at hatch so it could be either of those. Barrdwing if your peas have a few white flights then they are split white and the chick is probably white, if not they are probably split black shoulder and the chick is probably black shoulder

It has some light brown on its feathers.

Thanks, Superpeacockman! I hadn't known that about blackshoulders--it's very interesting. I don't suppose there's a book out there on peafowl color genetics? (I'm a huge biological science geek.) Most of our IB-colored birds do have a few white flights; some of them only have a white covert or two, which is rather cheeky of them.

Sunbaked, I know that I candled one of our pea eggs and saw that the chick had pipped internally; it did nothing for 24 hours, then pipped overnight and hatched eight hours later. I know what you mean about worrying for its air supply, but hang in there, it's still got some time. My husband thought I was a little nuts, leaning over the incubator and talking to the egg: "C'mon, kid, you know you're not done yet!"

Farmerboy16: Light brown? Interesting! Our chicks that grew up all white tended to look almost yellow at hatch, then grew in bright white feathers. I wonder if there are other color types than white or blackshoulder that start out white, or nearly white?
