Well I intervened with the last three eggs. 2 were severely underdeveloped and the third looked good at first but noticed that the one side of its body was mishapened and had part of its bowels hanging out. All three were gone.
So my little lone ranger is doing well and cute as ever. I think (at two days of age) that it is a roo. He is such a doll. I would like to get some more eggs (really cheap ones since 25% hatch rate or 10% if you count the first six I tossed because they were scrambled, isn't very good) and try again. This is soooo much fun. I have posted a pic of him so that y'all can see him and to show siz (who gave me the eggs) that at least one survived.
Our little Sir Henry who by the way has already grown some wing feathers.
I am soo sad to say our lone survivor from my hatch died in the early hours today. On his one week old birthday. He started acting lethargic and I started him on terramycin and was force feeding him. He had no other symptoms just very lethargic. Not really sure what happened. This is my first hatch and first chick fatality. My kids are so sad.
Just wanted to let y'all know.
Siz - I am sorry. I wasn't a very good surrogate mother.
oh my! I am so sorry it died. I wonder why. was it the only chick?maybe it was lonley.Or maybe it got to cold?I will send you more eggs as soon as I can
Oh siz you have got to be the sweetest person around.
We are not sure what was wrong with Sir Henry. He was just fine playing and trying to fly (can you believe his wing feathers were all in????) He would chirp a lot. His pen was at 105 F at the hot spot and from there he could move anywhere and the coldest spot was 71. I had a mirror in his pen so he wouldn't think he was all alone. He ate well and drank well. Stools were normal. Then yesterday at 1 he got quiet. I checked on him and he was having a hard time standing and acted very lethargic. A few hours later he would even open his eyes unless I was trying to give him water or food. Last night I was massaging him and holding him. and was getting very little response. I did start him on antiobiotics at about 2:30ish. He had been getting vitamins. Just after midnight he chirped his last chirp and about an hour later took his last breath. We all held him one last time this morning before we buried him.
The only thing I can think of is that maybe he was hurt internally. He flew out of his pen and dropped on the floor. He didn't seem hurt and was walking around fine after that. He didn't act any differently. We put the top on the brooder box so he wouldn't do that again. (who new EE's were escape artists??)
As my little children said. Heavenly Father must have needed him more than we did.
