Welcome to BYC!

I love my Easter Eggers (Americauna from feed stores/hatcheries) because of the blue/green eggs - and they are also very friendly and non-aggressive towards people - even the roosters. Their multiple color possibilities adds ambiance to any flock - and you never know what the chicks will grow out like.... I don't think they make good meat chickens though.

It has been my experience that the meanest roosters we ever had were from the ones the hatcheries call Barred Rocks, the second meanest ones were the banties...

Thanks ChickNmamma, I appreciate hearing about your experiences with the temperments. We have young grandkids so we definitely want to stick with breeds that are known to be friendly. My daughter likes the Americaunas too so we'll probably get a few of those. I want a mix of 2 or 3 breeds to start. Are there any other breeds with roosters that you'd recommend?

Well the real Ameraucanas are supposed to be nice roosters too, although I haven't had any yet (its in the works from a breeder). The Silkies make great pets, all the hens I have had (so far 3) are extremely friendly - and I haven't heard of a people aggressive Silky rooster yet! That one is great for pets - they love to cuddle and they are so darn CUTE! They also make great incubators... I think the Buff Orpingtons are also very friendly, both the hens and the roosters.
