Just starting out in Indiana

Welcome!

Welcome to BYC! I leave the door between my coop and run open, so that the chickens can come and go as they please - but that's because the run and coop are both (I think) fully predator proof. Short of an upset bear, but I don't expect to ever see one of those in our suburban neighborhood. Their free range time is supervised, although I find they'll still put themselves to bed at dusk, I just make sure to shut the big outer coop door up after them before I go in.

Well, I'm newly back from talking to a guy about a mile away who builds chicken tractors that look wonderfully solid, and asked him to build me one with a 4'x4' coop. He has his own little flock and has a good idea what to expect from predators in our immediate area, so when he says this seems secure and hasn't been a problem, I believe him.

So I'll have a coop in about a week. Time to look for birds!
