Hello everyone.
I was "city" raised and had never given chickens a thought. That changed in Feb.'12 when my girlfriend decided to start "farming", she has a small garden now that's producing and in Feb. she got 6 RIRs. We moved into our place last Aug. and converted a goat barn into a coop along with the pen. We live right along 8 acres of forest and the pen is within 3 ft. of the woods, so we've already had some losses. I think we let them free range a bit too early and it was buffet time for the varmints. My GF said if they can't free range she'll give them away.
Anyhow, I've been a OTR trucker for over 30 years and I'm gone a lot so the homestead is mostly on my GF. When she first mentioned chickens I was a bit leery and said OK, but they're yours.Doggnit if I don't enjoy them now, it's such a hoot to watch them scratch and peck wherever they go. They are absolutely eating machines. BTW, all those chicken cliches I've heard over the years are absolutely true. Thanks everyone, we hope to learn a lot from this site, K. Lee

Hi and :welcome

Glad to have you here!
Chickens are indeed awesome. We were also sort of sceptical until we started getting to know our neighbours and they showcased their own chooks.

Don't hesitate to ask any questions you might have, and enjoy the site. :D

Hi and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan :D

Does your girlfriend want them to free range all the time? If so (since it sound like there are predators around) you may want to give them away before they are all killed off :/ .

Some people let their hens out mid-morning or mid day, this encourages them to lay their eggs in the coop, and cuts down on predation by early morning varmints.
