My wife advised me that once our tour in Canada is over and we move back to the States, she wants me to stay at home and write as well as raise chickens. At this point, I'm looking at Dominiques as they seem to have a good personality and are fairly good layers. I never raised chickens before. I worked with cattle with my former brother-in-law when I was a kid. I enjoy baking, so the eggs will be a plus. I also am trying to help my family eat more real food rather than go to the grocery store and take our chances with what in actually in the food we buy there.

Looking for any advice and such for starting out with a small, backyard coop of docile, egg laying chickens. Not planning on eating the chickens nor having roosters.

I have never kept Dominiques, but have heard they are a very nice breed to keep. There are lots of other breeds out there too that are docile, friendly and are great layers as well. You might check out these two breeds pages on the different breeds and their attributes...

Welcome to BYC! You've come to the right place. Spend some time in the Learning Center, the breeds page, and the coop page and that will give you a good start.

I only have one Dominique, so I can only tell you that my girl is a bit more aloof than some of my flock, but she is not flighty, noisy, or skittish.
