Just thought I should put this on BYC Food info from Purina Mills

Our local TSC sells only Layena. They just only recently started selling medicated chick and adult feed. But in those tiny 5 lbs bags. I try to go to the local feedstore I used to go to from the start because they are cheaper and carry 50lbs bags of medicated feeds. The only thing is they are further away and I catch myself being lazy and just going to the TSC when I need just chicken feed and the feedstore when I need hay for the goats as well.

I will have to price at walmart as the feed store doesn't carry all those.
but they do carry some locally milled pellets that my chickens love. The Flock raiser is 22% and with free choice oystershell seems to be doing the trick for them .......27 eggs from 34 hens (4 adults are moulting)...

I have loved the purina feeds. I use the Layen for my adult flock and the starter for the chicks as they grow out. I have to grind the starter up a bit more for small bantams. The products have always given me great feather quality in my birds and good sized grown up chicks.

I feed Flock Raiser to EVERYONE. I put out oyster shell and recycled egg shells for my layers. Eggs are great! No soft shells from anybody yet.

congratulations Chicken whisper!! I switched to Purina Flock Raiser after reading roos should not eat layer feed as the celcium is not good for them. I offer oytser shell and egg shells on the side as well as a dish of grit,, chicks seem very happy.

I feed Flockraiser to everyone, except young chicks. They just love it. And do very well on it, eggs are gorgeous and strong. If I think about it, I throw a handful of oyster shell in the feeder.

Last year I used Purina chick start until they were 18 weeks old. Then I switched to Layena pellets. I will probably do the same this year. I might check into Flock Raiser. I have not checked with my feed store but I am sure they have it.

My chicks get the medicated starter (ground up a bit for the first few weeks) until they are out of the brooder. Then they go into the barn on Flock Raiser so I don't have to keep the hens, roos, pullets separated due to food requirements. Once everyone starts laying in the Fall I usually switch out to Layena only until the next Spring when the new chicks move into the shed. However, if there is a heavy moult going on I supplement back with Flock Raiser or even Purina Turkey Starter to bump up the protein a bit. and we always have free choice oyster shell, always.
