I called the Board of Health in my town and did all I had to do so I can have chickens. A neighbor close to me had just gotten chicks from Agway raised them til old enough to go outside and had them in a rabbit hutch in his yard. After getting my permit I was searcing where to get my birds, another neighbor told me he was looking to get rid of his because his girlfriends daughter didn't want them anymore because they weren;t cute little chicks anymore.

So I gladly took three hens off his hands. I have a fenced in yard with gardens and a koi pond.My girls are out when I am home and never leave my yard. Now for my vent........his three chickens are all over the place, in the road, train station parking lot (right behind us) , other peoples yard, picking in the trash. My neighbors keep coming over asking if my chickens are out, I thank them but tell them my chickens don't go out of the yard. I feel so bad for these birds!! Now mind you, this guy came over to see where the chicken were going to be kept because he wanted to make sure they were going to a good home......really?? I am waiting for the Board of Health or the ASPCA to come knocking at my door when someone complains, because I am on file for having chickens. I am thinking he probably never got a permit. The good news is my next door neighbor is going to take them next weekend. People like this is the reason towns do not allow chickens!! Makes me so mad, wish I had a bigger coop, I would have taken all 6!!!! He now has a quial that he "found" locked up in that rabbit hutch, poor thing!! His girlfriends daughter now wants ducks, so they are coming next!! Way to teach a kid about taking care of animals, don't want it get rid of it and get something else!! I think they should get rid of the kid and get something else......just saying!!

Nice vent! I am not sure why you should have to get a permit to have chickens but then again I don't live in the city for just that reason. Sorry about your neighbor but everybody has one just like them unless they live out in the country and that doesn't guarantee it either.

They are not teaching the child responsibility. I feel sorry for the child. And the chickens. I live in the country but I have a neighbor that is just as bad. His own dog won't go over to him. He says here at my house or next door at my parents home. He growls at his "owner". Now I'm going over there to make sure his bunnies have food and water.

Hello and welcome to BYC

I'm with you there, people should take responsibility for their animals/birds. It irritates the life out of me when they get pets and once the novelty's worn off the poor creatures have to look after themselves. Good luck!

Thank you for the compliment, but I must say it was my daughter's idea. I played Santa Claus that year and grew out a beautiful full curly white beard and grew my hair long as well. My DW and Mom sewed me a traditional Russian Santa suit and hat and because I am in the shape of Bhudda I was a natural! First little boy came up and patted me on the stomach and his eyes grew wide, very wide and he turned around and screamed at his friends and parents, "He's REAL!, he's REAL!!" Made my day. We also had the opportunity to gift a soldier back to his children that year. We put him in a big refrigerator box and wrapped him up and delivered him to the door. You should have seen his kids go nuts when they tore off the wrapper! Mrs. Claus was crying so hard she couldn't operate the camera.

Me in my Santa suit:

That is my niece, who did not know it was her Uncle Jim, yelling at her Mom that she got a really cool quillo from Santa!
