Just want some confirmation on gender

well all of mine ended up being cockerels, all went to freezer camp except the two I liked the best to see which one gets to stay. That decision has been made and the unlucky one will head to freezer camp this weekend. People that sell "sexed" chicks should be honest about their gender :/ it just meant doom for these boys to all be sent to one home.

Well that's horrible! Where did you get them from? Was the seller at all interested in making it right? I can see an Oops rooster or two, but that's ridiculous.

I found the guy on CL (never had an issue with dishonesty on there until this time I guess I was due). I honestly think he was a scammer. This is how it went down...

The chicks were listed as SR, so I expected about a 50/50 with the chicks I brought home. I was willing to take a chance. We got there. I jokingly made the remark, pick me out all pullets, I can't have a rooster where I live, and chuckled. The chicks were 3 weeks old at the time. He then says "the lady up the road sexes them for me, she keeps all the roos for herself, so they should all be pullets." and he pulled out 8 chicks (9 counting one with a bad eye that I turned down). As I glanced over them I knew 1 wasn't the correct breed, it was an EE, puffy cheeks, but I was good with that as it was cheaper to by all 8 (he had them listed $3.50 each or 4 for $10) and figured it as a "freebie". I got them all home really looked them over, yep learned my lesson there...there was a second chick that was also another breed and had a foul pox on it's leg :/ Ok, so my 2 freebies are something else, no biggie as long as they are girls. After a couple weeks I notice the EE has a 3 rowed comb :( yep...rooster. So 1/8. At about 8 weeks I realized at least 3 of the SS were roosters, so that made 4/8 boys, not bad, there's my 50/50 that I had originally expected but still semi-disappointing since I was told "they should all be pullets".

I did, however, end up send him an email and told him I felt I was lied too. I also informed him that one chick had foul pox (that's where I should have looked them over better) and they all had pretty severe Coccidiosis. I expected no response but he did respond with an, I'm sorry you are having so much trouble. I sold 50 chicks and you are the only one with a problem.

Somehow I seriously doubt that, I probably was the only one to speak up. That was it. So no he did not try to make it right.

Anyhow after holding out hope that my remaining 3 SS were girls they all ended up being roosters. I ended up with 1 cream legbar pullet, which was the other "extra" chick. So I spent $20 on 1 bird in my mind that wasn't even ready to lay for months  Sadly she is the one that had the foul pox and her growth has been severely stunted, she might be 3 lbs at 5 months old. But she's a sweetheart so she has a forever home.

He should have just never made any comment about their gender, so to me he intentionally lied about them all being pullets just to make the sale.

Live and learn I guess. Sadly SS aren't that easy to come by in my area so CL seems to be the only place to rely on other than having birds shipped in. Afterward I did find another person that had them almost 2 hours away and I bought 3, he only had 3 pullets left. Guess I'll be on the hunt again in the spring :p

I did, however, post a nice "warning" on CL about what he does. Hopefully I spare someone else from the same fate.

Sorry for your bad experience. I've also had really good luck on CL (mostly selling, granted) and it's my go-to advertising.

Just a word on your CCL pullet--she may not be stunted, they're just tiny birds. I have one who's about 5 months old and she's noticably smaller than the age mates of barred Hollands, Marans, Rhodebars, Rocks. They've got a good amount of Leghorn blood and I think they mature around 4-5lbs, so she may not be far off what she's supposed to be.

Thanks, people can be so disappointing lol. Oh well, I have learned from this experience.

Oh wow, that's good to know about her size. I had read somewhere hens around 6 lbs, maybe I am thinking something else. :p
