Just went out to put the chickens away for the night, and one of them was outside laying on the ground. She can’t seem to walk. More details in post.

When the legs don't work, it's usually something pressing on the sciatic nerve. Check her abdomen. Feel for lumps and if it's hotter than it should be. My Bantam Cochin had the same symptoms and a lump in her abdomen. I thought she was egg bound, but it wouldn't pass. I couldn't afford the $600-$2000 surgery and expected her to die in the 48 hours generally predicted. She didn't. I thought it was because I am hand feeding her and had given her antibiotics.

Expecting I would have to euthanize her, I gave her pain meds, an anti inflammatory and 500mg of cephlexin to keep her comfortable until I worked up the nerve. That evening she appeared to be improving and in good spirits. I chocked it up to the drugs. In the morning she was even better. I figured the drugs were still working and continued struggling with euthanasia.

This evening she was still in good spirits. Drank on her own and ate a half dozen small grapes. So I checked her abdomen. The heat is gone, the lump is smaller and softer. She seems to have had an intestinal blockage and infection. I believe may have cleared the blockage when I inserted lube to help get the egg that didn't exist to pass.

In hindsight, the next morning she had pooped A LOT. It was a lot of lube. I thought the egg was in the vagina (shell chamber).

I thought this might be pertinent with your girl already having a GI tract issue.

Update: she’s totally fine this morning. When I took the blanket off her cage she stood up and looked around in the bathroom like “where am I?”. I took her back outside with the other ladies and she’s running around and eating / drinking with them like normal. Her clucks sound a bit like sad trumpets, so she might be hungover - I gave her lots of hangover snacks. I guess it probably was the fruit. Thankfully nothing more serious.

Glad she's okay. Continue fluids for the next day. Sounds like it was the fermented fruit and a greedy gal.

If she continues to overindulge, be sure to sign her up for AA meetings.

Hello, my name is... Lol.

Thankfully this is totally preventable.

It’s funny you say that, my mom works as an AA counselor and I just made the joke to her “hey do you guys accept chickens as clients?” 😂
