Just when I thought I had already seen EVERYthing...

My goose is overly friendly with my flock of duck hens, but never has he shown the slightest interest in my chickens. He bites them if he catches them eating food he wants, but other than that, ignores them. As far as cross species mating, he is a chinese goose, and isn't really big, and he doesn't try to mate the mallards, just the swedes, who totally do the flat-duck dance for him... so while I don't find it funny, It is commonplace, and doesn't offend my sensibilities... it sure doesn't offend theirs!

but generally, I prefer if the manimals keep their 'parts' to themselves.

F.W., please send us the link to that thread you've mentioned, I think it would be informative as well as beneficial. I still wonder if it was the drake's penis that did the injury to the chicken hen's vent, or if maybe she instead sustained injury from his toenails as he tried to position himself on her back. Chicken hens push out some sizeable eggs out of their vents, and can accommodate examination by a person's finger if egg-bound. But perhaps a drake could cause an injury to a chicken hen's vent since she's not designed for penetration by his part the way a duck hen is. I don't know for sure but would like to learn more.

Like many poultry keepers I keep an assortment of species in my backyard flock and I choose to allow them to range the yard together. That's fine if you don't. Although I've seen my share of interesting & unusual behaviors, I certainly am not amused if an animal injures another and the rare times that happens I take immediate measures to prevent it from happening again. Most of the time most of the birds get along very peacefully. Instances like the one described in the original post are rare enough to warrant the mention.

I don't think the rooster hurt the duck hen at all yesterday. She wasn't making any noise in protest. And he doesn't have any parts that would penetrate or injure the duck's vent. Afterwards she just seemed a bit puzzled by it all, and somewhat annoyed to have her feathers ruffled right after she'd preened them.

Feathered Wings: I SECOND it! What about the animals! This is less than entertaining........

I just finished a bit of online research & haven't yet found anything about a successful duck + chicken hybrid. There were several sites where folks getting their first glimpse of a muscovy duck thought they were some sort of chuck or dicken, also a photo of a duck in Asia with un-webbed feet, but I think that is a genetic mutation, not a hybrid.

I refuse to be part of this thread any longer

Sorry i could not find the link i read that back in the spring when i had my Cayuga's don't remember if it was here or on the web.

Feathered wings: I Second thast wise decision as well................

My friend has one duck and a RIR Roo..I could have sworn one of the duck eggs I saw cracked open had a bullseye on it! I will ask him if any of the eggs hes hatching are duck eggs or just chicken eggs?
I edited to add he also has like seven hens!
