A co-worker/friend of mine said his 7 year old daughter really wanted to try and hatch some eggs, so i mentioned to him that i had some fertile quail eggs and an incubator set-up that he could borrow so that she could have a go at it, he agreed and his daughter was very happy!! Just before i gave my quail to Laputa i saved 10 eggs and put them in the closet in a dark, cool enviroment. I gave my buddy the incubator to set-up at his house and get things stabilized, the next day i sent the eggs home with him and a list on what to watch for and instructions on what to do.

We timed it so they would hatch on a Saturday so she could experience the event. Well, he took the eggs out of the turner and put them on the wire last Thursday and they started hatching on Saturday, as planned!! She was so excited when she called me and told me that 6 had hatched and one was pure yellow, i told her that one was going to be a pure white quail called an A&M, the excitement in her voice was well worth the experiment!!

My buddy said he would bring over the chicks on Sunday since they dont have the room or time to raise them, i said no problem. He asked how he would get them to me (he lives 1/2 hour away), i said just get everyone loaded in the car and unplug the incubator and head out. When he got to my house i was under the weather and wasnt in my right mind, but seeing the daughter carry the incubator over to my brooder with a big smile was awesome!! I unloaded the chicks into the brooder and showed her how to dip their beaks in the water and sprinkle the food on the paper towel.

I looked at the remaining eggs and two were pipped!! So i helped them out in front of her and her family and popped them in the brooder to dry out (the membrane had stuck to them during hatching preventing them from popping out) and when i checked them this morning all eight chicks were doing great!!

So for a family that has never hatched eggs or even owned any type of fowl, they did really good with a 80% hatch rate on 10 eggs!!

So here i am with 8 chicks in the brooder and another experiment in the process, i will feed them flock raiser and with the weather cooling down and less chicks in one area, i will see if they still pick at each other! Then when they mature i will BBQ them!!

Just thought i would share a success story with yall'!.......Jason

Sounds like they had a great experance with it. nice to share something with a child. Even if ya dont get anything from it ya will get a good BBQ

What can I say.

For all the 27 hens I got from you including the young ones, last week they have peaked at 26 eggs for one day, that made me really go WOW - I suspected some of them laid twice on that day. Later it went back to the regular 22-23 per day.

Now it has become our family's daily relaxation to fill the feed and water in the morning then collect eggs in the evening, and I sometimes just sit next to the cage watching them and hear their sounds. They are giving us so much fun. We have also been spreading it around by bringing some eggs hard boiled with some Chinese seasoning to friends gatherings and they all love them, especially the kids. Thank you Jason!
