Just when you think you’re safe...

Yeah i know, thus the welded wire behind it. Regardless, it pulled my girl through the chain link.
I'm just saying, if a raccoon can get it's hand through, then your chickens aren't safe. And where there is one raccoon there is a dozen. Apparently whatever you are using doesn't keep the raccoons hand out. A picture would help here.

You can never let your guard down with chickens. Raccoons work on any structure they think has food, so always check your perimeter for weak spots even if your coop was like Fort Knox last week, it can change overnight with a raccoon, as they are persistent.

And sorry about your chicken...it's heartbreaking to find them massacred. :hugs

Is their roost close to the wire, so something could just reach in & grab them off of the roost?
Not even remotely close. Their coop is a 8*8 walk in plywood structure at the other end of the run where she was killed. The run is roughly 15*15.

Great coop! The breach is the run. The chain link fencing and chicken wire wont keep little raccoon paws out. We have a lot of raccoons here. I put 1/4" hardware cloth around the bottom few feet and then a hot wire at the top of that. So far no breaches.

I covered the fence with insulation for now until we can do something different. What i can’t understand is why she was out of the coop when it wasn’t even light yet!

You also have the "large" chicken wire over the chain link, 1 inch would be more effective than that. I have 1" all around the bottom of my chicken yard/coop along with the 2"x4" welded wire on side and top. Did she get left out or does the coop not get closed off at night?
