Just wondering...

So why do I only get 7-12 eggs a day if I have 13 hens? The number changes everyday. I don't really know the anatomy of a chicken or the cycle an egg takes, but if any one knows this kind of stuff, it would help clear up some confusion. Thanks, this isn't an emergency or anything, I just was wondering why if they are supposed to lay one egg a day I am only getting 8 or 9.

Not every chicken will lay an egg every day. Some of the best breeds won't even lay an egg every day and ones that come close, like the leghorn, are only that productive in their first year. It is normal for 13 hens to give 7-12 eggs a day. The number will decrease as they get older. I have 26 hens and only average 13 eggs a day.

Some breeds don’t lay every day.
What breed are they ?
Yes, this^^^
Age and time of year can make a difference too....as well as nutrition and space.

Where in this world are you located?
Climate, and time of year, is almost always a factor.
Please add your general geographical location to your profile.
It's easy to do, (laptop version shown), then it's always there!

Our chickens are about 10 months old and started laying in January. It is winter/spring here in Missouri. I am near the Saint Louis Area. OK thanks I'll add my general location as soon as I can.

No breed of chicken lays every single day. I believe there is a world record of 365 eggs in a year! The breeds you have will lay around 220 to 280 eggs a year.
My egg production also varies. For example, if yesterday was a bright sunny and beautiful day then today my chickens will lay 12/13. But let’s say yesterday was a cold windy and rainy day. I will probably get about 8/13 eggs.

That's interesting.

Hatcherie quality birds tend to lay more eggs then breeder quality birds.
Brahmas, buff Orpingtons and heritage Rhode Island reds won’t lay every day, from my experience.
If the majority of them are laying hard shelled healthy looking eggs then there shouldn’t be anything to worry about.
Brahmas are very slow to mature, breeder quality Brahmas are even slower, yours might not even be laying yet.
Laying hybrid hens can lay every day for long periods of time but they do take breaks which usually occur in winter.
