We are new to raising chickens. We started out with 4 chickens acquired through the purchase of our home. The house came with 4 chickens and 2 Nigerian Dwarf goats. These just blended in with our house menagerie of 3 dogs, 4 parakeets and 1 Greenwing Macaw (aka eternal 3 year old). We have quickly expanded our flock to include 6 Wilco pullets (ok 5 pullets and very likely 1 cockerel). Then...why stop there...we acquired 4 additional hens from a posting on the Wilco community board for hens that need a home stat! We have a mixed lot of hens for sure. We have Ameraucana, Cuckoo Marins, Gold Sex-link, Blue red laced Wyandotte, a Ameraucana/Spotted Sussex mix and a couple we just are not sure about. So far so good, but I do believe we have 2 cockerels in the mix and we are hoping to be able to set our pasture up to accommodate both roosters, even if doing so requires getting more hens. In short, I know I will need some guidance down the road and BackyardChickens.com came highly recommended.
