Kane is hurt! Vet appt. made

It can actually take about 6 weeks for a bad sprain to heal. Start by giving him a buffered aspirin twice a day. If you don't have buffered aspirin give him one with a tums or pepsid twice a day. He can have a full 325mg aspirin twice a day. No tylenol or anything with acetominaphin in it (I'm sure you know this).

During this time I would keep him quiet. If he is not better in 4-5 days then you need to take him to the vet and get Xrays. Take him sooner if he seems in really serious pain. If it is soft tissue damage not to worry - it will heal in time. He probably had no idea how to land and did a major face plant.

Is it a front leg or hind leg? Any hot areas? Any swelling? Any tender spots?

Brindle, it's his right rear leg. I think I feel some swelling just above the "ankle", but I'm not sure. Could be my imagination. No hot spots, but he doesn't like it messing with it. You know how these dogs are, very stoic. My concern is that it seems worse today than it did last night. DH says it probably stiffened up on him overnight.
I haven't called the vet yet. DH just got up - he was up all night sick.
I have vetprofen leftover from when Charlie Girl was sick with her cancer. Wonder if I should give him that. We also have low dose buffered aspirin in the house.

The vetprofen we have from the vet is 100 mg. The ecotrin (coated aspirin) we have is the low dose, 81 mg.

I know I shouldn't be upset with Jax, but I am. He knows darn well better than to go over the fence. With Jax being long and lean, clearing a 5 ft. fence is easy for him, but Kane is short and stout.

I'm sorry this happened, too. Hopefully it is just a strain. I'm not familiar with vetprofen. You might try 3-4 ecotrin. I know you are terribly worried right now, but it will most likely be just fine. If he did sprain/strain it, it would most definitely stiffen up overnight. You might try putting a little ice on it.

Would it be practical to put a hot wire around the top of your backyard fence?

Don't be mad a Jax. I mean, be mad for him going over the fence, because he knows better, Must have been a varmint to chase. But don't be mad at him for Kane getting hurt. Jax won't understand why.

Oh, and ps - my shepherd was just about the biggest weenie in the world. So is Bill.

Well just to give you a little positive side he could just have a slight bruising injury. If he isn't yelping when walking on it or trying to I would give it a couple of days. I went through this with our mini snauzer who thinks he is hercules. After a 200.00 trip to the vet for a sprained leg which got better in about a week he did it again 2 weeks later same symptoms not putting weight on it, limping, not wanting it to be touched and felt. So this time bad doggy mommy I am I said nope we will wait and see how it is in a few days and low and behold after 4 days of rest and confinement the little pest was good as new. We have gone through this about 9 times now he just thinks he is a big dog and this five acres is his territory which he "guards". All bark no bite but he flies through and over and under everything and keeps slightly injuring his self. Rather than numerrous vet visits we wrap, give aspirin, and he is always good as new after making him rest. Not that I encourage not taking animals to the vet but sometimes if it can be helped at home the same as the vet it saves the pocket book. I would follow some of the suggestions people posted and wait a few days before getting that big bill unless he gets worse or cries in pain when feeling of it or trying to use it.

Kane is resting right now. Still won't put weight on it. Poor thing has a heck of a problem when it's time to poo (sorry, TMI).
The vet said to give him the vetprofen - same dose as for Charlie Girl. At five months old he's as big as she was grown

- and to give it a few days.

I'm spoiling him. I let him have some extra kibble at suppertime. Yes, he's s'pose to be on a diet, but the poor baby is hurting. I laid down earlier with a headache and decided to spoil Kane and let him rest on the bed with me; DH had to lift him on the bed. I thought he would enjoy the nice cushy bed vs. his usual spot on the hard tile floor. To my surprise he hated it and couldn't wait to be let down.
Gonna take a wait and see approach, but if it's not better by Saturday I'm taking him to the vet.

Brindle, we have discussed a hot wire at the top of the fence. We are getting a 6 ft. high chain link put up this fall, hopefully.

Not sure how much it's going to help with Jax. I watched him the other day. DH had some friends stop by and he was standing outside the fence talking to them. Jax couldn't stand that he wasn't within reach of his master. Jax went straight up and straight down the other side, never touching the fence (in that section it's about 4 1/2 ft. high). He doesn't even have to get a running start.

He didn't run off, just went and sat down next to DH.

I'll update y'all on how Kane is doing. Thanks.
