Kansas Folks?

Hi all! I’m in Atchison, Kansas (about an hour north/west of Kansas City). I’m looking for a couple of bantam pullets. Anyone know where I can find some not too far from, say, the Kansas City area?

I started with five bantam chicks early last spring, but lost them to coons over the summer. Lesson learned #1: Just because the chickens can’t get out through fencing doesn’t mean the coons can’t pull them through. (Boy, what a sad day that was…) Choose smaller wire fencing, at least around the lower 18” or so around the bottom of the coop.

Next batch of chicks I ordered from CackleHatchery, online. Plus I got a couple of 4-month-old chickens I bought off craigslist. All was going well until one day when the electric dog wire we put around the chicken yard came unplugged. Chicken massacre. Our own beloved dogs killed all but one baby chick that I found hiding under the ramp to the upper level of the chicken coop. Lesson learned #2 – never leave the chickens to free roam when the dogs are out – even with an electric dog fence. Take no chances.

I babied the one lone baby chick for a couple of weeks, spoiling her rotten, before I finally found a nice young pullet and a young silkie rooster to keep her company. They all meshed together well (though I think the baby chick, Emma – now three months old – still thinks I’m her mama!)

I’m enjoying the tiny flock of three, but Walter – my roo – is starting to get amorous. Emma still isn’t really old enough to “mate” yet, and I’d like to find a couple more hens to maybe keep Walter distracted. He’s taken an interest in Emma and I’m a little concerned. My other hen, Zelly, just doesn’t seem to interest Walter much. She’s a rare breed “Rapanui” (so I’m told) and quite small at 8 months old, but tough as nails and a great friend to Emma.

SO…anyone have any ideas where I can get a couple more hens to keep Walter busy and also help keep my coop warmer in winter?

Well, I guess I've reached my "PM" maximum for today. Too much of a newbie, I haven't earned more than two private messages a day yet!

MsBagawkbagawk - you're right, that's a little too far for me to go for two chickens. Thanks, though, for the offer!

Quadchick77 - If you're available tomorrow for me to pick up a couple of chickens, send me a reply here tonight or tomorrow, or a PM tomorrow. THANKS!
