I started with chickens almost 4 yrs. ago (St.Patrick's Day is the cluckers bday). My husband wanted some since the neighbor next door had 3 so we purchased 6; and the neighbor added 3 more!
I live in Nebraska; the chickens are Rhode Island Reds and we kept them in a make shift coop in the garage.
Fast forward to today... I only have 1 chicken left. Her name is Sqaucker. Yesterday we lost 1. We lost the other 4 over the past yr.
I want to put her in the basement in her own room; and return her outside when winter is over. Here in Nebraska the weather has basically just started feeling like winter. It would save on the electric bill - (heat lamp) and she is sociable towards me.

All of us here know the pain of lossing members of our flocks.
So sorry for your losses
