I've been looking at Rat Terrier breeders and there's several with some puppies available right now or litters due soon that will be ready early fall and I am sooooo tempted to get one LOL

But then I think about if Gator will get along with a small dog or if he does, that maybe I need a bigger dog so that Gator can play rough or play tug of war. He doesn't really play rough or run at all anymore I guess but he loves tug and is very strong. And all of the potential doggie friends are bigger. There's Libby of course*, plus my friend's 2 Golden Retrievers (they're pretty small but still), brother's neighbor's dog (some sort of pit mix, similar size as Libby), and my brother's friends who sometimes bring their dogs over, one has a English Cream Golden, who's similar age as Libby but kinda small, maybe he'll fill out, who knows, and one has a big German Shepherd. Our neighborhood has lots of small dogs but people mostly walk them rather that play together so idk.

Maybe a rat terrier could hold it's own? I know a bigger one like a Decker probably would be able to but idk.

I still kind of want a Lab or Golden and that would fit in better with all the Labs and Goldens we know but idk. They're still pretty big and I wouldn't be able to take it with me if I got one. A rattie at least I would be able to take with me if I found a pet friendly apartment cause they'd like be under 25 pounds. But I also worry how dog friendly rat terriers are?

*For those who don't know Libby is brother and FSIL's 9 month old Great Pyrenees/Lab/Boxer puppy, 62 pounds already.

My smaller dogs have always gotten along with the bigs, and play with them the same. It does all depend on what you want out of a dog. Writing down what is most important to you can maybe help whittle it down.

Things to think about are size, coat care, degree of activity, which is important. Don't get a dog and expect it to get you moving more, you may grow tired of that if you don't like to daily go out and play with a dog for hours. I don't even like that. You also need to think about all the other critters you have and what breeds are good with them. I love airedales, westies and cairns but know they aren't right for my life.

I personally love dogs that play long into their live, forever puppies, I like smart dogs. I don't really like double coats and prefer smooth coats. I like brachial breeds. And I like a bit of feisty, but than like a dog that can relax. I like dogs that like to be with me and don't mind being followed everywhere.

Going through that process honestly helped me whittle down the breeds for me.

I like rat terriers because they are feisty but they can turn that off more, but they still are terriers with a high prey drive and they will want to hunt when given the opportunity.

It seems we like similar things! I personally do like the double coats though but Libby has a shorter coat and it is nice too. Idk, too short of a coat and it just feels lile you're petting skin which is weird to me. Do the boxers have fur still? I like being able to bury my hands in their coat, idk, I'm weird lol but it almost makes them more huggable or something especially when the coat's really soft. But I could do without the shedding. So if that's why I understand. Because it's a lot of vacuuming and a lot of brushing. But it's personally worth it to me. I'm not sure I'd go longer than a Lab coat though. I'm not even really sure I want a Golden. Lots of fur, lots of brushing, and lots of mud being tracked into the house LOL it'd practically require a bath or at least a swim anytime you did anything. Leonnerger or Newfie or full Pyr would be even worse lol

I like the brachial breeds too but idk if they could keep up on hikes? And yeah, dogs that can't settle are just annoying lol part of why I decided against a true working breed. I do love dogs and love training/working with them and playing/exercise and all that stuff most people hate haha I like to go beyond just obedience and get into tricks, training games, mental challenges, etc. And/or possibly getting involved in a dog sport which is why I need my own dog so that I can do all of those things and train it my way. BUT. Despite all that, I don't want to HAVE to do any of it. I want a dog that would be content to just sit inside and watch TV with me all day if I didn't feel up to it or it was raining or maybe be content with some mental games or something. Which is why I think a retriever or something is a good choice because something like a border collie or malinois just wouldn't settle and don't have an off switch lol and a husky needs lots of physical exercise. I do hope to hike and bike and stuff with a dog but realistically, idk how often I would do that, and almost all of the training and exercise I would do can be done on our property because we have almost 3 acres. So even if I'm not up for a hike or walk, maybe I could train in the yard. That said, I love walks, just that Gator can't go on many or go far. Idk. Although hopefully a dog, even a retriever, would somewhat force me to go outside and not just sit inside all day lol

I kinda wish Gator followed me around. Although he somewhat has been more lately. He eventually comes in and lays on the couch next to my chair or lays on my feet while I watch TV. So having a dog that's really bonded and wants to follow me would be good but especially if that turned to being really handler oriented and focused during training. Or even if it just means being in tune to my emotions.

And do you think a rat terrier would be a bad choice with the chickens and cat?

What's that?

A tumeric paste type thing, supposed to be good for joints and a lot of other things. I made it for the dog but many benefits for people too so I think we're going to try it. Really simple to make.

Although some say that tumeric doesn't have that much actual curcumin in it or doesn't digest that well or something and that taking straight curcumin, like pills or something, is better but idk. I think tumeric still provides plenty of benefits. So I'm going to try it.

Actually my mostly rat terriers have been good with my birds, but they loves squirrels, and rodents outside. We used to take our last one to a local park so she could watch squirrels from the car. I like that I can exercise my rat in the house. Since rat terriers do vary in size looking for a medium to larger one would be better.

Most boxers have thin coats, a few can feel a bit more dense, but in general they are thin coated, but I like the texture of it and their heads and ears are always soft. They also usually smell good. They have a warm fritos/cheeto type of smell to them which I like.

Australian shepherds actually smell like poodles to me and I'm not really fond of that smell. My Boston French bulldog has no real smell. My rat has that Fritos smell, especially her feet. I guess I'm going weird, but I gotta like the smell of my dogs too.

The more you talk the more it sounds like an Australian shepherd would be a good fit for you at some point. I haven't owned a corgi, but those are supposed to be good dogs too.

We are pretty similar, so I think you would like a Boston or rat for a smaller dog too.

Thanks for all the info!!! Your rat sounds really awesome. And I didn't realize different breeds had different smells LOL but yes I do think an Aussie would be a good choice eventually! Maybe when I get some land? And yes I loveee Bostons and rats! Although I also love border terriers or cairns or westies lol
