My Aussies carry toys around like a golden retriever would. The one always grabs a toy to greet me. The older on will walk around and pick up all the rawhides so her mouth is jammed cull than she deposits them at my husband, usually in his lap.

I personally like reds and black and haven't actually wanted a blue at any point. I want a black tri too at some point, so I guess I'm not done with them yet. My favorite color of course is the red tri.

I like the name of that kennel, Headstrong is one term I would use with an Aussie. They keep you on your toes. I'm excited for you if you decide to go that route.
 
Both kennels have nice looking dogs. They would be more show quality so not as quick. They will have more coat too. I love the look of my show bred ones. Both of mine tore their knees though where my working type hasn't. They are a bit pricey too, but maybe that's regional. I paid 300 and 750 for my show bred, and my working was on clearance for 175, 13 years ago.

Aussies have become more popular recently. I follow a few Facebook groups and there's always puppies for sale everywhere but Wisconsin.

Wow they sound amazing. Similar to Goldens but yet possibly a little more energy and drive. Which is perfect. And are they playful or at least fairly active into old age? I was reading borders can be like 10 and still running around.

Idk why but I have a weird thing with red, not just dogs but red anything, don't like it/kinda scared of it and 3 and 6 lol i think it started a few years ago and a result of them often meaning a certain thing ha I'm ridiculously weird :(

A darker red like chocolate I may like though.

And yeah, I thought it was a funny name lol

And yeah, I think I want a show one but maybe working would be better. Idk. It seems the show ones are more common? I didn't even realize there was a working Aussie. Whereas thw BCs everyone usually recommends to never go show.

And wow that's cheap! Did you get direct from a breeder or from like Craigslist or local or something?

Just wondering because it seems when you go on breeders sites of almost any breed, even Labs and Goldens, it's usually over $1000. Usually either $1200, $1500, $1800, or $2000, seen a couple $2500. So it seems the top show ones that test and all that stuff are usually around there. And that seems to be common around the country or at least at the ones I've looked at in other areas too. But of course price does not always indicate quality. Maybe it is just because they are top breeders producing lots of champions and stuff? Maybe ones that don't themselves show or only show casually but have show lines are cheaper? I really do not know. But it seems to be about what a puppy from a good quality, reputable show breeder is around here. Not that other breeders can't be reputable or good quality but it seems to be a pretty common price. I do have other breeders bookmarked though lol I have a lot bookmarked actually for lots of different breeds. Maybe I will dig up some of the Aussie ones and see what you think. :D if you want to that is. No obligation. I also think I might go to some dog shows and/or agility competitions and try to meet some Aussies and Border Collies.

Btw, speaking of Border Collies, did you ever get a chance to watch the rest of that video? Thoughts?

But if you noticed, they also have tons of titles on the backend as opposed to just championships so that implies they're trainable I guess?

So I don't get how they could be stubborn yet trainable enough to do obedience, rally, agility, get the CGC, and all that stuff????
 
Oh btw I noticed some breeders some of the dogs had really fluffy butts, if i got them, I'd try to find parents with a little bit less coat :P
 
OH! And I forgot, I am also having somewhat of a hard time finding standard breeders. It seems quite a few are breeding the minis or toys and/or Miniature American Shepherds. I would rather a standard as I feel it's more predictable and not mixed

This is my opinion on Miniature Australian shepherds, just my opinion is they aren't an actual separate breed, just people trying to make money if they are calling them miniature Australian shepherds. What was being called miniature, became a breed called north American shepherds, or miniature American shepherds, they are AKC registered.

Now I could be wrong I haven't been keeping up on all that stuff but lots of the miniatures I have seen appear to be mixes, especially with sheltie. The toys are just a joke, they mostly look like Pomeranians with a docked tail. True Australian shepherds registered with the AKC, or the ASCA is what I would be looking for. There are tons of made up registry places that don't mean squat these days. I would avoid anyone adding miniature to the Australian shepherd name. They don't know what they are talking about or selling. That's just me. If you are going into it knowing you are being handed some bull than at least you know.

I like show bred dogs, they can range in coat and size, so you can find one that fits your desires if you are willing to search. Most breeders will have a waiting list.

I got my last one through a breeder I found online, and I waited almost a year for her. My older Aussie came from a local breeder/hoarder, that I should have walked away from but I didn't. Frankie has definitely been a different dog, but always mostly no trouble at all, and she's been pretty healthy. My first Aussie I got from a show breeder I found on line. Apparently both my show bred dogs are related which was interesting.

Here's what I learned about training Australian shepherds. They don't do orders. They do requests. :lau As an example my one dog takes pills daily. She would refuse to open her mouth. The more I tried the more she clamped the harder it got. So one day I explained the pills to her, what they are for, and asked her to open her mouth in my nicest voice, and that dog did. So since than I ask, I tell her what the pills are for and she lets me put them down her throat.

Aussies don't like to hear they are bad or naughty. They like to hear they are good, and they like when you laugh. So training in a way that is demanding will get you a dog that shuts down, and won't listen. Explaining and asking an Aussie is the best way to train one. They are super smart, like a border collie, but they need to understand more than that border collie does. :)
 
As far as the video she described the differences between a border and Aussie to a tee. A border doesn't need to be by you and doesn't mind going away from you, and can work far away. An Aussie doesn't want to leave your side too much so they are close workers. They also just run into a situation with gusto.

If I was doing herding a border collie is the go to dog. If I want a friend who will sometimes challenge my intelligence, than an Aussie is your dog. You are reminding me why I switched. I never felt a bond with my border collie. My Aussies are always with me and always engaging in some way, even if it's laying on my feet.

Border collies just need a job and you are the means to that end. They can be affectionate, but it's more of a distance thing. They also are prone chasing cars to keep themselves entertained.

Lol and yeah, minis look like mixes to me too lol and sorry if i implied they came from a less good breeder or anything, just nevet heard one that cheap. I think it must be a regional thing. Maybe I will look up breeders your way lol

LOL your dog sounds like Gator! Just a week or two ago he had something and wouldn't drop it, don't remember exactly what it was, I think a little toy or something he shouldn't have and had no use for, and I said drop it two or three times and he wouldn't so then I had to negotiate with him. And right before that I had scooped some ice cream and told him he couldn't have any. So I was talking to him all nice, like please drop it, you don't want that, etc. And then I was like do you want some ice cream? Remember that thing I told you couldn't have before? I'll give it to you, you can have that thing you couldn't have if you drop it, and repeated that and ice cream a few times, and wouldn't you know it, he dropped it LOL :lau I think I gave him a dog ice cream or something instead of mine but still ice cream. And one time he was about to open the recycling and I was like you don't want to do that. I think I offered him cake or something. I actually posted it on FB. I will see if I can find the story LOL

Since they're so sensitive, do you think clicker training/positive reinforcement would work well? Of course still establishing clear rules.

And I love having a bond with my dogs so Aussie definitely seems to be the better choice.

But does that mean they don't like distance stays? Or will they do it because you asked but not be happy about it? Lol
