I never thought about that?? Hmmm....I'll have to ask the hatchery when I make my order if that is something we should worry about? I'm thinking not...

I always get mine vaccinated for Marek's and Cocci...don't you all??

my mistake
see its a myth.

The myth is that you can only vaccinate day old chicks. You can actually vaccinate your birds at any age. The difference is that as every day goes by, you run a greater risk of your birds being exposed to the virus before you have a chance to vaccinate. Two more myths are that you can’t mix vaccinated and unvaccinated chicks together and that you can give your flock Mareks by exposing them to vaccinated chicks. Since the Mareks vaccine is actually the Turkey virus, you cannot give your birds Mareks by vaccinating. Also, vaccinated chicks cannot hurt unvaccinated chicks by mixing them together. My personal practice is to ‘booster’ my adults every year when I vaccinate my chicks – day old or otherwise.

no, medicated feed is used for cocci

but now that i have read the article on mareks i just might start

My RIRs are pipping and hatching now, so I'll have a few of those, YAY!

The other chickies that I'll be bringing:
Light Brahma Pullets
Ameraucana Pullets
White and Buff Silkies
White Crested Black Polish

Yippeeeee!

And a couple of my Orpingtons and probably my 4 white silkies - all about 8 wks old.

Ok...I called Mt. Healthy and she said that was a great question and that most hatcheries do not separate out the vaccinated/non vaccinated chicks while packaging etc and that it is not a concern. SHE also said that Marek's is almost completely non existant now and that really the only vaccination you should really worry about is Cocci if the hatchery offers it WHICH they do not. So that being said...my chicks will NOT be vaccinated...which is nice because it saves me $$.

great info, sooo what did you order??

Now I do know that McMurray told me to not feed the Chicks MEDICATED Feed if you vaccinate for Cocci...because it NULLS the vaccine?? So I stayed away from medicated feed when I vaccinated for Cocci.
