keep me away from the bator

It is a sickness that I once did not understand. I hatched my first ever round of chicks 4 weeks ago. This past weekend I hatched my last bator full for the season. On Wednesday I filled it up again!!

The first 2 times was in the basement. My wife would not let me hatch them upstairs. When they hatched my wife was the overseer. She checked the bator every 15 minutes. The second round, she turned the eggs some. She even took lunch at 9:00am to come home and turn the eggs when I forgot one morning.

On Wednesday of this week she said you are going to have to bring that thing up stairs so I don't have to walk down to the basement every time you forget to turn the eggs!!!! I have only forgot one time in 2 hatches. I guess she saw the eggs on the counter with x's and o's wrote on them. I had not mentioned hatching any more eggs this year. Now it is sitting on the bar in the kitchen. I see her peeping in once in a while to make sure they have been turned correctly.

On the first hatch she got mad because we could not go camping because the eggs were supposed to hatch that weekend. She said I would hate to think a styrofoam box full of eggs would rule my life like that. One the 2nd hatch her friend asked her to go somewhere but she said she couldn't because the eggs were supposed to hatch on Monday but she needed to be around in case they started early. I almost flipped.

It is a sickness!!! I have been looking for people to hatch eggs for. The 2nd hatch went to my wife's uncle because his flock is old and needs replacing. I feel he needs a few more so he will get part of the next hatch as well. Maybe I can build another coop for the 4th and 5th hatch.

I'm w/ you on the giving chicks away!
I've given a few chicks to 4 different people so far. I pick the show birds out of my chicks and give the rest to new homes. Lots of fun to share. Some of my chicks are mutts from the backyard, but they're pretty mutts and newbies don't mind mutts. Can't wait to see what my 'grandchicks' look like someday!

callducks, be careful. Sometimes when you have too many bators to clean and tend it becomes less fun.
