Keep Runt as a pet?

Well, it sounds to me like she's content and not suffering. When they're suffering, they tend to stay in one spot, head hung and eyes half shut. She will probably, eventually, die of a heart attack but, then, you know that. I think you made the right choice by keeping her.

OMG I love the name "Lumpy" hahahahahaha.....I'm gald she was able to skip the butcher block....I def think she needs a buddy tho!! Maybe a duck will teach her how to swim! hahahaha

There is a gene that causes short legs. I've heard it called the dumpy gene, but I have no idea what the proper name is for it. It doesn't make the chickens unhealthy, just short.

My kids "pardon" one meat bird in each batch. One hen (cornish x) of the usual huge size is still alive and kicking three years later. She lives on a friend's farm, lays a beautiful huge brown egg every few days (as she is older now) and is a great pet. Good luck, Lumpy!

That's ironic because my kids had "The Chosen One" that they tried to get a pardon for, but only one pardon was granted to Lumpy! Thanks for the uplifting story too!

Interesting! I think Lumpy may have other issues besides physical. She still doesn't make much for chicken noises, I've only heard her peeping. Also she has no desire to defend herself other than "running" away. I've never seen her challenge or fight with anyone. I'm not saying she won't change, but for now she's a real pushover.

Heck my Brahma, Montana, is the biggest of the bunch and will never put up a fight. She is a big sissy.
