Keep the Pansies!

Winter is so difficult when everything in the garden is dead or sleeping! I want to plant pansies to keep some color in the yard... but I have read that chickens love to eat them. How do you keep chickens out of your flowers without covering them in bird netting (which is unattractive) or putting up tall fences (which isn't an option for me). Are there companion plants that they don't like which I could plant intermittently between the pansies? Any help would be MUCH appreciated!!!
