In the Brooder
Hello everyone,
I know this questions has been asked several times "How do I keep my chickens cool". I know everyone has different ideas and things that can be done for large birds. But I have never heard anyone talk about ways to keep chicks cool in the summer heat. I have tired researching it and everything I have found is for adult fowl. I can never find anything about keeping chicks cool, only about keeping them warm.
Normally I wouldn't want to keep chicks cool but keeping them cool needs to be done when the tempetured reaches about 114*F out side my place in the shade, and even hotter out in the sun, and that's not even the tempter in the peak of the day, and for chicks let alone adult birds that's pretty hot. Today is increasingly hot as there is no breeze at today either and its not even the heat of the day here yet.
My coop is well ventilated but because there is no breeze my coop is still really hot. because my chicks are still so young and not fully feathered out yet I don't want to hook up a mister for them. I have tried giving them some water melon, cucumber but they wont touch any of it. I do freeze about 2 thirds of their water, and fill the rest up with cool water so their water stays cool all day. I also freeze zip lock backs with water for them to stand on and they wont use them, Nor will they lay next to frozen jugs of water. I have tried a small fan as well but with the heat the way it is it just blows the hot air around and dose nothing for them. All those tricks work for my adult birds but not the chicks
My roo has a tray of shallow water to stand in and he loves it, but I can't give a tray of water to my chicks as I have one who is a runt and well......he's special.
So I was wondering if anyone else has any ideas that would work for chicks that 3weeks old and younger to keep them cool. As much detail in your responses, and some pictures would be very help full to me.
