What are the chickens finding to eat this time of year? I feed them three times a day.....but they are still out there pecking and scratching. I didn't think there were any bugs out in the winter here in Virginia.

I am in Minnesota with snow covered ground and they are out scratching and digging everyday finding something.
Minnesota.....I just picture miles and miles of snow. I spent a few years near Cleveland so I have seen a bit of snow. We get a bit here in Virginia from time to time...but not much in Tennessee where I am from. My chicks didn't want to come out of the coop the day we had three or four inches....lol. I need to make a cover by their coop so they will get outside when it snows again. I guess they would get used to it if we had more? This is the first winter for most of mine so I guess they don't know what to think.
Yesterday, mine found a grasshopper (Nebraska) and we've been down to 4* AND a mouse!
My SS Hamburgs are out there scratching and pecking 8-10 hours a day. I have no idea what they are eating, but it seems to make them happy. 
Of course, they get their feed and a treat here and there, but mostly they like to go hunting.

Most of mine have about finished their molt and are looking shiny and sleek. Only a few are still working on it. One poor hen looks absolutely dreadful. I just feel terrible for her every time I look at her. She has almost no actual feathers at all, they are all just pins so she looks like a deranged porcupine.

Feeding everyone mixed wild bird seed so to supplement for what Molting may have cost their them.1 PR looking better, feathering out, Leghorn coming around S-L-O-W-L-Y, poor girl. Bannix worked REAL well on her from just the few days that have gone by.
My source in NORTHERN CAL, NOT wantabe Sac, says serious rain coming so heading our way…..Been MUCH more like Montana Autumn this year. BEATS THE HECK out of Last year!

Mine are out all day long scratching and pecking as well. I think they find a few bugs even in the cold weather. But they probably find a lot more seeds and such this time of year. LOL...I think I sacred that hawk off...it hasn't been back yet...
Hopefully it stays gone!
Did any flying pellets of lead happen to hit the hawk when you were scaring it?
Does that happen around your place to? must be the altitude. We have accidentally and very seriously/mortally scared many raptors around these parts for decades. Naturally there have been investigations but noting could be shown that the warning pellets were from our good-intentioned charity work!
