Keeping Chickens Free Range

Kept my birds locked up all day. Egg count down. Wanted to see if down b/c day length shortening, molt commencing, or they were hiding eggs. seems it was the former. Now to decide if I should start supplemental light now, or wait out the molt a bit before starting light. May wait a week or two. Had to put down one of my hens today. EYP. ? secondary respiratory issues.

Well, the chicks that showed up last day of August are in the hutch now, been between the house & there last few weeks.

Everyone else is free range. I thought SURE the Momma hen was eaten recently so hiked up to where I had seen her setting, also recently, to collect her eggs. (Stinker had me looking for a while) She's setting again.. Explains why the back yard has been an exciting place in the early morning hours.. This keeps up, I'll be Selling chicks, rather than buying them next spring..Hope the hound dog doesn't mind being outside...
Hee hee, Just saw the Onrey Rooster chase a wild Turkey...Making room in freezer for him....

Oh, Hound dog with the NOW older chicks:

I only have 3 girls currently (2× 17week old wyandottes and 1x laying light coronation sussex) they only get 2hrs each afternoon to wonder our small yard.. We will be moving out to acreage soon so cant wait to let them have more space and a larger flock

It's likely you'll have more critters, predators. Folks across from me lost about 5, blamed it on the coyotes, had folks hunting the coyotes. I TOLD them, I saw a Fox carry off one of my own chickens within a yr of they moving in...

A good livestock guardian dog trained to live with the birds makes a good deterrent to predators.
