Keeping Chickens in the Backyard

I would use it to compost and possibly give some to a co-worker who is just starting her composting venture. Actually she's taking me out today so I can buy a compost bin (going to use her Costco card.

I would get bantams if I were you...they are quieter. Have you ever thought of getting Serama's?? They are the smallest of the chickens and you can keep them in a pretty small hen house. And they are QUIET too

Whatever we keep, we want to keep for eggs as well so they'd have to be good egg layers.

I plan on having 4 large hens in my 15x15 townhouse backyard. I am having them in an eglu with a homemade run that is 3x15 with the eglu run attached to that. The Eglu makes the most sense for my yard, but I have also considered making a coop out of one of those big plastic rubbermaid deck boxes. I think my chickens will be just fine back there. My veggie garden is going to be above them in a huge planter box. It seems to me that people think the chickens need a lot more space than they really do, but the small coops I see on here take up no more of a footprint than my set-up will.
I see no point in having a lot of wasted space in my backyard, so I see no problem with taking up that much of it with the chickens. My yard has no grass, the chickens will be on bark chips.

Some friends bought a cute doghouse to be their coop. It was cheaper than materials to build a similar size unit.
Other folks have bought kid playhouses to build a coop out of.
We just 'remodeled' our kid's old wooden swingset into a coop.
Use your imagination!
Cool thing about the kennel is that you could probably move it inside if the weather was really bad.
