They can. Especially if the ratio is lower than 10:1.

Even with numerous hens most males will break feathers on their favorite hen(s) from frequent breeding. You can decrease feather breakage on the back (but not on the neck, but it is less common there) even further by using a good quality hen saddle with shoulder protection.
