Keeping ducks drinking water clean......how?

they get enough water...and they are free range ducks, they have 2 swimming tubs set up. and they are healthy. I never said they were designed for ducks, but they use them and they get the water they need!

I might have over thought this, but this is my design.
It is still early in the use of it. It seems to keep the water fairly clean.
With only 3 ducks, I can go several days before adding water.

Water hose feeding supply bucket. I never have to enter the pen to fill bucket.

Float valve in second bucket to control water flow.

Dirty water from drinking area falls into lower chamber to be flushed as needed.

Flush valve ran outside of pen.

@Beach Duck 1 - looks like a great system! Thanks for sharing. Would you mind explaining a bit more of how it all works, especially the lower chamber & flushing part. Are you just turning on the hose, as needed, to fill that first bucket?

I have come across a saltwater tank sump pump, which I am going to try to use to clean my duck pool. I'll let you know if it works!

I know your post is 2 years old, but I was wondering if you could Let me know how your fresh water system is still working out for you? Is it possible to supply pictures and give deminsions of your system? Out of all the ideas posted I like yours the best. Do you live in in an area where you have freezing weather and what do you do that time of the year?

Thanks...

I made a duck waterer from a 5 gallon bucket. I cut openings for them to place their heads inside to drink. I have a float valve to maintain the water level. I feed it by gravity from a 5 gallon jug. I plan on a bigger supply container in the future. My first attempts were using a vacuum feed supply. The water level changed within a couple inches. The vacuum was so strong it would crush the supply jug. The float valve keeps the water within about a 1/2". . There is a rubber stopper on the side of the bucket at the absolute bottom. I pop out the stopper to release the dirty water every evening. I put the stopper in and the bucket refills itself. The bucket sits on a grate in a tray that drains to the outdoors. I keep my chickens and ducks in the same coop. The ducks also drink from the chickens nipple system.

How big are those slots, and how far from the bottom do they start? How much depth do you get? I am adding a similar gravity fed bucket to my coop as we have added some ducks to our flock. The nipples are fine, but I want to make the duck water as easy.
