I've hear people keep them out of the run by digging down 1 ft and have hardware cloth in the hole then fill it in. I was wondering if you could just have the bottom of the run covered by hardware cloth.

Covering the bottom of the run with wire is inviting foot injuries.
The birds dig gigantic holes to dust in and lay in. The wire would be in the way for that important digging.

I did not dig straight down and bury the wire. I laid it across the top of the ground and pinned it down. Within just a couple weeks grass will make it invisible. If pinned down well the mower wont catch it either.

Use the long narrow pins. They do NOT pull out like the wide pins do.

Bumble foot is not fun for anyone. ;)

Agrees.

Good examples of apron installation, tho I'd not recommend 1/2" HC...go with 14ga 1x2 or 1x1, will hold up much longer and is easier to lay flat.
