Hello, we have 12 chickens in a large coop. Our run used to have grass, but the chickens soiled it. So we covered the grass with pine shavings, the grass died. We change out the shavings with poop every 2 days, but its a lot of work. I was wondering if there was some other bedding people put in their run that is not as labor intensive and does not become so soggy with the rain.
Thank you

Thank you,
I use pine shavings, would that be considered wood chip. Would you mix the chips into the soil or just put it on top of the old substrate.

Nope, wood chips look like the pic on the bottom. Just put it on top, the chickens will mix it themselves

What you need to think about is covering your run. It reduces the sogginess when it rains, and offers better predator control.

I use coarse construction sand in my run, and it scoops easily, keeping the run poop-free and odor free.
