I found that exact kind to freeze up ... I think close to zero F. It doesn't have to freeze much to block the water from filling up the bottom.

Ok
I watched the video that someone posted with the salt water in the plastic bottle submerged, I’m going to try this out this winter.
Thanks for posting the question, because I would have never learned about this otherwise ❤️

I'm in Ontario and have found the heated dog bowls to work fairly well. I made an insulated cover to go over half of the opening, and it sits on a little stand, this keeps them from pooping in it so often. For the most part I just bring warm water from the house to top it off.
I don't have any roosters so haven't had any trouble with combs or wattles getting wet.

Do you have a picture of the insulated cover. I used a heated dog bowl last year and it worked well, except it was hard to keep the water clean with all the dust and shavings. I also had a problem with my silkies getting their crest and beard wet and walking around with icicle goatees and mohawks, a half cover may help.
I did make a horizontal drinker with a 5 gallon bucket but I cant get them to use it. phooey, I thought that would solve all my problems.

I don't have electricity in my coop but my cousin does and has had chickens for YEARS. she uses a crock pot filled with water set on warm

Did you remove all other sources of water when you used the horizontal drinker? I have never worried about mine using the nipples. Once put some new birds in new coop after dark. By 7 am they were all using the nipples after drinking from a dog dish where they had been before. Even the neighbors' birds learned to use the nipples rather than go to their homes for a drink. Birds naturally poke at red and shiny things. Only takes one to get a drink and they all learn within an hour.

I can seem to find the cover, oops guess I'll be making another one before it snows. It's nothing fancy. I just cut a piece of plywood to cover the top and then I notched out a couple inches for them to drink from. I glued some styrofoam from a cheap cooler to the lid to help retain some heat. They hop up and stand on it sometimes, but their aim isn't usually good enough to poop through the opening.
My cream legbars have no problem with it, but I could see how the silkies may still get wet.
