Kentucky Chick- perch/roost question

My second hand hen house's roost or perch is a 2 x 4 laid flat, not upright. I would like to replace it. What would be an optimal width for the perch itself?

If you're planning on using another board, a 2x2 or a 2x4 turned upright should suffice. If using something rounded like a branch or a pole, 2-3" diameter works well for me.

Appreciate the advice. I was leaning towards the 2 x 2 but thought I'd ask.
