I got some young cambells and runners and I have read that some say they fly others don't so I was wondering if they will fly when they get feathers.

My Khakis don't fly. They *flap* their wings really big and impressively and then stand on their tippy webs and sort of hop. LOL. It is hilarious.
They have gotten off the ground at an altitude of about 4ft and moved there for about 6 ft. I wouldn't really call that flying though.

I have heard that they will try (like mine are doing) when they are younger, but then give up as they age.

I am new to this though and I may be incorrect.

I have kept several kinds of ducks over the years and found that the only ones that fly are the small kinds (mallard, call ducks, mandarines, etc.) and of course muscovies (only the females though, the males are too heavy). My Indian runners and Campbells did not fly, not even when chased, but, oh, can they run! Geese can fly, but generally do not bother. I know of a farmer who has a small flock of geese, that flew down to pasture every day, but came back when called. I hear that geese may fly away when wild geese pass overhead, but have not heard the same of ducks. I do know of people who have lost mallards, woodducks and mandarines, but mostly when they were frightened. For that reason I always cut the feathers of one wing of my smaller ducks, female muscovies and egyptian geese, but had some narrow escapes when careless after the mold. It is best to only cut one wing, to throw them off balance, because they can still fly if both wings are cut, although with much more difficulty.

You said call ducks can fly? I just got a pair of ducklings and don't know too much about the breed. Do you have to keep their wings clipped? I like to let my ducks free range when they're old enough and they go into the pond. Am I going to be able to do that with them?

Our Khakis used to try to fly when they were younger, now they don't even seem to think about it. I think the best I ever saw was about 6 ft of alititude, for maybe 30 feet, they just are not built for it.

They do run pretty good though.
