Khaki Campbell Limping Badly

I have a three month old Khaki Campbell that is limping pretty badly. I thought I noticed a slight limp a few weeks ago, and one of the ducks falling down sometimes when running (may or may not have been the same duck). But starting yesterday, the limp is quite bad. When we look at the bad leg, there is considerable swelling around the joint. See the pictures we took this morning. Currently I have the duck fenced in so that it does not try run with the other ducks - however, the other ducks seem to want to stay close to the fence near their friend.

Any idea as to what the problem is or what I can do to fix this?

Thank you,

Looks like an injury - at least a sprain.

Epsom salt, in addition to being a laxative, is great for healing sprains and strains and pulls. So I would make an Epsom salt compress (two tablespoons E.s., half a cup of warm water, soak a clean cloth). Wrap the compress around the foot and leg, and hold it there as long as you both can stand it. Ten minutes is great, but any time is better than nothing.

I have put a tiny dab of Traumeel - an ointment for such injuries - on duck legs from time to time.

And give it time, keep the duck relatively confined and quiet for a few days. Watch the foot. If the swelling does not go down, you may have a minor infection in there and need to follow the first soak with a dab of clear iodine, then check a few days later for a dark scabby spot that may be able to be soaked so the scab can be easily pulled off.

But let's see if a few days of twice daily E.s. soaks helps. Please keep us posted.

Thank you very much for your prompt reply. The first wrap was done tonight. A lot of squawking and some squirming. We got about 8 minutes in. We had some sliced grapes on a plate - halfway through the treatment he gobbled them down. Good quality time - I enjoyed it.

About the Traumeel, is there some other ointment I can use? I can't seem to find it anywhere near me.

I'll post an update in a few days.

I like to use herbal ointments. The ingredients that I find helpful are arnica, comfrey, and St. John's wort. If you can find any of those - soak them in warm (not hot) olive oil for a couple of hours, then dab a little of the oil on the leg.

I don't know about the commercial ointments. Perhaps someone else knows of one.

I just want to let you know that my duck is doing fine now. I only had to wrap his leg for a few days. Thank you very much.

Eric
