kids 4 H project

I tried a couple different tractor "prototypes" this year. The best was a trampoline which my buddy didn't want. I bought a 4'x50' roll of plastic snow fence ($30?) and zip tied it tight to the top. I had to slice along the ground at each post, This makes a 12" skirt around the perimeter. then you have a place to lay a piece of firewood, or anything on the low spots. I wrapped part of it with a tarp. Worked good. I need one with wheels now and work on an over head door. Duckwalking is doable but not the funnest way to do chores. These are pretty cheap on CL. Good luck. Blaine

Yeah, I'd like to get double the Cornish Cross, too.

I use a stock tank and half of a plastic car top carrier as brooders. If you want cheap, you can put a piece of scrap vinyl flooring on the floor (cheap at the big box stores) and use boards or plywood to put together some sides. Hang a heat lamp from the ceiling on a hook. Use shavings on the floor so the chicks aren't directly on the cold floor.

If you've got pets who want to eat your chicks, you will have to make a cover for it: light weight wooden frame with poultry wire usually works unless your pets are really determined.

It's cold here so my heat lamp has a hood over it and if it is really cold, I drape blankets over the hood and down the sides to keep heat in.

We've gotten, extra's with our cornish X, but they were not Cornish, they were alying hens. We noticed a differnce at about 3 or 4 weeks of age. (Probley sooner had we paid good enough attention)

You live in Texas? So no snow? Rain a little or a lot? You should be a able to build something quite cheap? Sorry I have no ideas for a coop like that, am looking forward to hearing everyones ideas. Where we live, we can usually count on snow for 6 months of the year, so my ideas for Texas, are none..

Would definitely suggest getting a few extras. They are so prone to issues you wouldn't want one wind up having 3 and the rest having 2. I didn't have any trouble but for show I would err on the side of caution.

Thank you so much for replting to my forum. One set of chickens won reserve grand champion. the other set of chickens won third place!

Since they are for 4H project, I hope you are not getting from hatchery. As for the brooder box, anything large would do. You can evening turn wood pallet into a shape box and keep them outside with heat lamp on top. With some work it can be very secure at night.
