Kids traumatized this morning

I am so sorry your family had to go through that

That has to be upsetting to the children. I am not sure I wouldn't be upset too. But I also see the beauty of nature at work.

We have had hawks swoop through the trees right over our head, so close we could feel the wind on our faces. I have also watched Jays and Crows harrass hawks and drive them from the area. We found a stunned hawk standing on the yellow line in a high traffic area, after scooping it up and moving it to safety, it flew off in a rush.

If it got my chickens - well, it would be sad, and I would need to find a way to keep my yard from becoming a feeding station - I wonder if I can hire some crows?

Take care, consoul your kids as best you can and take care.

Sounds VERY much like a raccoon or opossum. They can (and will) reach their skinny little hands through that chicken wire like it's not even there and grab a handful of whatever they can grasp -- head, leg, feathers, etc. so please invest in some hardware cloth. They may be small, but even they can't reach through that 1/4" mesh. So sorry for your losses.

Wylie...sounds like a raccoon is your culprit...they grab what they can and pull it through the chicken wire...Welded wire or hardware cloth helps to prevent that.

Ken, I am so sorry for your loss, especially since your DS saw it happen...

I lost Miss MoneyPenny to a redtail also...He had killed her and was plucking her right by my back steps. When I came out and scared him, I got a face full of bird of prey.

OMG!!!How horrible for you and your son. I never imagined that a hawk or any predator could be that hanus. (Can't spell hanus and spellcheck was no help at all SORRY)
Anyway. I lost a baby chick yesterday and have now confined them back to the outside pen. Enclosed on all sides and the top.
As for shooting the predator. JUST DON'T ADMIT TO IT!!!! As a lawyer I once worked for said. Never provide more information than is asked of you. Keep it simple and you won't get hurt!!!

As for some of these laws. It seems that animals are more protected than humans. GRRRRR! I understand only to a degree. If you can shoot a person in self defence and/or for invading your property then it should be the same for animals. (Like the bear story) GRRRR. That makes me mad!!!

We have alot of hawks around here. They got several of our chickens last winter.I have an enclosed coop now(dog run with extra panels added.I just strung fishing line from one side to the next(back&forth) over the top.The bids of prey cannot, and will not fly into it.( so I've heard)The hotels and resorts on the ocean string fishing line over the balconies to keep sea gulls from landing and pooping all over.Got that info down in Hilton Head,S.C. last winter.Hope it works. You really can't see it,hope the hawks can. Will let you know if it works....SUNBURY CHICK,OHIO:fl
