Also, so happy to see kiki hatch
Okay I’ll try and be concise (who am I kidding I’m a chronic rambler)

My top priority is friendly and heat tolerant. Also needs to be good in confinement. I don’t care about the rest tbh. Here’s what I wittled down to:
Easter Egger (had them before, they were bat**** crazy but I want to give them another chance)
Andalusian (apparently they aren’t good in confinement?)
Barred rock (had them, love them)
Legbar (expensive!!!)
Welsummer (would they be okay in heat?)

If you had to pick three based on my criteria, which would you choose? I’ve researched a ton but need advice from actual owners at this point.

I’m actually asking everyone, just singled out Kiki because we have similar climates lol.
I have a Welsummer and while she is a great layer and a lovely bird, I kind of hate her. She is so freaking skittish and probably the dumbest chicken I will ever have.
I love my EEs, but the only kinds that I get are the Ameraucana crosses. I find the other mixes to be pretty darn flighty. No, they are not the best layers, as Cyprus pointed out.
I also have a very sweet and curious Speckled Sussex. She makes the funniest sounds and seems to be hardy.
I'm pretty into the partridge and speckled varieties as they are a bit more camouflaged from birds of prey. They are the main threat in my area and I free range only (too lazy to build a large covered run).
Are you set on standard birds? A lot of bantam breeds seem to do really well confined and come with some fantastic personalities!

They do tell and they (the NPIP peeps) are suppose to list all breeds that they have. Some do not.
But I can look real quick to see if there are and SS breeders that are NPIP in our state.

Also.
NPIP doesn't mean healthy.
In Texas NPIP means your flock has tested negative for PT only.
PT doesn't really even exist anymore.
I used it for name look up mostly. It did list the breeds as well now that you mention it.

As far as who to get from... if it's a person check them out. See what they require for a farm visit. If it's walk right up and touch everything, then no. If they ask you to wear shoe and or clothing covers and not handle every bird in the place you should be ok. See if and what for they vaccinate. In general how do they care for their birds.
Then come here and get a second opinion. LOL

I knew NOTHING when I got my first chickens. I didn’t even know what a crop was  We all learn as we go and help each other :hugs
I mean, I DO know things but when it comes to chickens its mostly textbook knowledge and not experience, if that makes sense? I try and ask for advice and not give it when I’m not totally comfortable with a topic.

Tbh now that I’m less zombie brained I’m cringing super hard at that chicken farm or whatever. I should’ve at least noticed the ivermectin every month. WTH.

Am I too late to name them? Morgan and Stan. Morgan for Morgan horse, Leon for Stallion.
They are gone to their new home.

Gosh I hope the dude made them a scrambled eggs for breakfast.

Horse Egg X
I need to double check the day it is on.
I am pretty sure it is due on Thursday.
