Killer bear!!! Advice needed

Not dumb animals at all are they. Now that is scary.

Bears in Missouri are mainly in the Ozark part of the state but if you go to the conservation site and look at their maps they have been found as far north in the state as the county to our southwest. We are in Macon county which is in the lower part of the northeastern section of the state. We find suspicious claw marks on trees in our timber at times and wonder if the black bears are continuing their northward march in the state. Very scary thought indeed as cougars are making a resurgence here also.

I'm reading, learning and filing it away for future use. Time to and another hot wire.

Living in Juneau AK I was out the road as they call it with a kennel of small dogs had 4 hot wire lines all on separate chargers the best way to stop a bear as you have been told is 30-06 or 4 to 6 wire charge all on separate lines one gets knocked there are three more
to stop them

There's a reason they don't raise pigs in Alaska... Bears love pork! Up there bear-proofing is cinderblock and steel doors. Bears are very destructive.

The best advice is to build to protect against and thwart your largest predator. Sounds like you've got the biggest and baddest. Sorry!

I used to live in a log cabin in Alaska. Not even a full year but boy did I learn the ropes quickly. My biggest fear was grizzlies, but black bears are scary, too.

People up there pound lots of large nails through boards and mount the boards over doors and windows when they're not home, the sharp points sticking out. And one gal I knew who lived deep in the woods always carried a gun.

We were told by neighbors recently that a large black bear has been visiting them. We usually get our trash cans knocked over once or twice a year, and the dogs never bark. They bark when a bunny farts in the woods down by the creek, but a bear just off our back deck, banging around in the trash cans? Nothing.

Now that we have chickens (our first year), I'm thinking more seriously about hot wire. The coop isn't electrified. I'm guessing a weatherproof extension cord is a bad idea, to be used at night only? Solar panels with expected downtime on cloudy days?

Any wildfire concerns with hot wire?

Is plexiglass stronger than glass and therefore a better option for windows?

Such a terrifying experience you had. I hope you find your darling hen.

No danger of fire. I try to keep the grass trimmed under my hot wire but as a rule, the current will brown and kill the grass. No arcing.

You can get solar powered chargers. A little cashy but well worth the money. Since I have power to my coop thanks to DH I have the ability to just plug in my charger to a ground fault outlet but if the power goes out I can hook it up to a deep cell marine battery.

I do recommend keeping the grass trimmed under your wire as wet grass over the wire will lesson or dampen your current considerably.

Back in Pa, the Priest of one of the churches there has bee hives. Last year black bears came in and ripped them to shreds. So this year, he put a hot wire around them. Complete success, so far, and that is against 3 momma bears, at least 3 cubs, and a papa bear.
Sorry for your loss and the scare. (Ran into a black bear when I was a kid, 16,)
Good luck!
B
